VALLEYS

2019
Porcelain

Inspired by the mountains of Jing De Zhen, Valleys is a series of sculptural vessels that pay homage to China’s natural landscapes.

Valleys are elongated depressions between uplands, hills or mountains, especially one following the course of a stream. At first sight, valleys seem synonymous with nadirs and periods to be filled with fear. Yet, with a small change in perspective, valleys may also represent places of rest and rejuvenation, a time of respite before we continue on our journey of personal development and uphill challenges. This work marks that shift in mindset for me, and it is a piece that I hold close to my heart. I hope that audiences who come across this work may similarly find rest and wonder in the grace of nature.

In 2019, I was given the opportunity to participate in the FRANZ Park Artist-In-Residency programme. There, in the heart of the world’s porcelain capital, Jing De Zhen, I challenged myself to create bigger and more organic forms using the slip-casting technique. The resulting work immortalises subtle contour lines that resemble textures of natural erosion and sedimentation. The valleys also showcase the dynamic and vibrant colours found in FRANZ products, a tribute to FRANZ for the amazing opportunity afforded to me.
